Tutor Safety Tips for Students and Parents
EduConnect does not check, verify or vet tutors. Listings are written by tutors and reviewed only for obvious problems (spam, inappropriate content). Please do your own checks.
Before the first lesson
- Ask for the safety check required where you live, and check it with the issuing body: a Working With Children Check in Australia (each state and territory runs its own), a DBS check in England and Wales (PVG in Scotland, Access NI in Northern Ireland), a background check in the US, Garda vetting in Ireland, a Vulnerable Sector Check in Canada, or your local equivalent.
- Ask for references and qualifications, and confirm them.
- Have a short video call first.
During lessons
- For anyone under 18, a parent or carer should arrange lessons, know who the tutor is and be nearby.
- Prefer online lessons on a known platform, or in a public place or your home with others present.
- Keep messages on channels parents can see.
Money
- Agree rates in writing. Avoid paying large amounts up front or in cash-only deals you can’t track.
If something is wrong
Use “Report this listing” on the tutor’s page and we will review it. If anyone is in danger, contact your local police or emergency number straight away.
